The Gotthard region with Andermatt as its center will host the festival "Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics" from 22nd June to 1st of July 2018. As in the previous year, once again world-class soloists will realize the idea of the founder Peter-Michael Reichel - to establish a classical festival around the mystical St. Gotthard, which should become a "fixture" in the calendar of international music lovers.
“I am thrilled to be part of the Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics this year. What I have heard about Andermatt is great. A charming mountain village in the heart of Switzerland with an amazing landscape. I am very excited to spend a few days there.”
"Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics" is a festival that is characterized by the proximity of the audience to the performers as well as the unique backdrop - the region around the St. Gotthard, which already incerted an incomperable fascination on immortal geniuses such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Franz Liszt. The concerts take place in different locations: Andermatts parish church of St. Peter and Paul, the five-star deluxe hotel "The Chedi Andermatt", the newly opened gondola station Nätschen and the most important cultural center of the canton Uri, the "theater(uri)" in Altdorf, alternate each other as a venue. After "Mozart" has been the motto of 2017, this year´s "Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics" is dedicated to the topic "family".
For most people who devote themselves full-time to music, the family was the first place to encounter this art form, without which - according to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche - "life would be a mistake". As in many other areas, there are several extraordinary talents within a family in this area.
The French sisters Katia und Marielle LABÈQUE, world-renowned as a brilliant piano duo, will be performing the opening evening in the new middle station at Nätschen, an equally unusual and attractive venue; the pianist Elena BASHKIROVA, born in Moscow, and her son, the violinist and violist Michael BARENBOIM, play chamber music with the Austrian father-sons-trio Clemens, Dominik und Benedikt HELLSBERG; Benjamin SCHMID, one of Austrias leading violonists, is giving a "Vienna Recital" with his wife, the Swiss pianist Ariane HAERING; the festival concludes with a concert by the original sound ensemble ORCHESTER WIENER AKADEMIE, conducted by Martin HASELBÖCK and featuring his father Hans HASELBÖCK.
In a broader sense, the evening that LANG LANG designed on the 30th of June 2018 in the "theater(uri)" also correspondends to the motto "family". After having to cancel for health reasons last year, the Chinese star pianist will present four young "pianists of tomorrow" in this summer, who are supported by the "Lang Lang International Music Foundation", founded in 2008, and will also play excerpts of Masterpieces of piano literature with them.
"Music is powerful. I want every child to have access to music experiences that ignite something wonderful inside of them, just as music delivered something incredible for me."
Lang Lang will also hold a short public conversation (in English) with Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, artistic director of the festival, about the goals of his foundation and the musical education and promotion of young people.
Dr. Hans Haselböck, emeritus professor for organ and improvisation at the "Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien", who celebrates his 90th birthday on July 26th 2018, is the focus of the concert of the original sound ensemble "Orchester Wiener Akademie", conducted by Martin Haselböck. Hans Haselböck, who won the International Organ Competition in Harlem three times in a row, has become a "cult figure" of the organ scene for a long time. On July the 1st 2018, he will perform cheerful Renaissance music, a sonata by Bach´s son Philipp Emmanuel and improvisations on Swiss folk songs in the charming parish church of Andermatt - the latter together with his son Martin, who has put - next to the works of Biber, Haydn and Mozart - the concert for two violins and orchestra by Johann Sebastian Bach on the program, which meets the motto "family" in two ways.

Peter-Michael Reichel’s idea in organizing in Andermatt a festival fascinated me in the same way as former artists who visited Andermatt like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Franz Liszt that described the region as follows: The beautifulness and the dimension of nature correspond to the beautifulness and dimension of art. I am grateful that world top artists and renowned scientists followed our invitation and are ready to let inspire themselves by this unique ambience.
President & Organiser
Already many years ago, we got the idea to organize a Classic Music Festival, it was only by our emigration to Andermatt that we found the perfect location to develop this event. Also the fortunate circumstance to allure Professor Clemens Hellsberg as Art Director, being one of the leading international experts, made it possible to develop our festival.
