We’re pleased to announce the success of the first ever ‘Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics’ festival.
Founder of the festival, Peter-Michael Reichel, is extremely satisfied after the five concerts and six lectures. Already in the first year the festival has exceeded its expectations. "We had expected 700 to 800 visitors, however we welcomed closer to 1000. This was despite Lang Lang, the original star of the festival, having to cancel at short notice."
Igor Levit, who replaced Lang Lang on the opening night, had proved to be a stroke of luck. The transformation of the Multi-purpose hall into a stylish theatre space, the beautiful ambience of the Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul in Andermatt, the mystical Sasso San Gottardo Crystal Hall and the (concert) rooms at the Hotel The Chedi Andermatt were perfect spectacles.
The artistic director of the festival, Prof. Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, was also extremely pleased with the festival week. "Thanks to the outstanding artists, the creative results have fully lived up to expectations. The various performance venues also from an acoustic point of view, proved themselves. The concept of utilising intimate venues and the proximity of the performers to the audience has been a success. The artists behave differently than in the anonymity of a big city."
Igor Levit, Olga Peretyatko, Herbert Lippert, Philharmonia Schrammeln, Isabel Karajan, the members of the Swiss Alps Chamber Ensemble, Emmanuel Tjeknavorian and Maximilian Kromer, all enjoyed performing in Andermatt. It was particularly gratifying and remarkable that despite the ambitious musical programme, the audience was extremely focused and attentive.
Head of the events production, Sandra Reichel, and her team worked hard to implement new concepts regarding this first festival. The smallest details were considered, for the audience every element of the performance should be an experience. It was particularly important to Sandra Reichel that the festival be "anchored in the region": “This has been achieved," she concluded. "This is the case, for example, by the performances of the Cäcilienverein Andermatt and the Alphornbläser. We want to continue the integration of people in the region, it is very important to us. “
"A great start and a lively festival week has created a good foundation for further creative development.” This was the shared view of Founder Reichel and Artistic Director Hellsberg.
The program for 2018 will be ready in the Autumn of 2017 so that the public, the media and the organisers of travel for the arts are informed early enough to bring even more Classical Music lovers and interested guests to the Andermatt region.
Taking place in 2017 for the first time, the ‘Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics’ organisers together with founder Peter-Michael Reichel pursue the ambition of bringing renowned international artists to the village of Andermatt, adding a new cultural format to the region.
This classical music festival supports the ambitious construction venture of resort developer Samih Sawiris; “Andermatt Swiss Alps Project“, in revitalising the elegance and luxury of this tourist destination.
This construction project of around 3,800 additional lodgings distributed between 6 hotels, 490 apartments and 25 luxury villas contributes together with the Andermatt Swiss Alps Classics to awake the sleepy Swiss mountain village and make it to a year-round holiday destination.
Andermatt offers within the picturesque valley of Uri, the ideal destination for all seasons. During the Winter the region is guaranteed snowfall on the mountains (Gemstock: 2,961m), allowing numerous winter sport possibilities. During the Summer season the region now offers a classical and cultural music event.
From June 25th until July 1st 2017 each day will feel distinctive as renowned artists deliver their personal performances, often accompanied by our newly founded Swiss Alps Chamber Ensemble. Throughout the festival the life and work of Mozart represents the central theme in all orchestrations of the festival programme.
Our programme is completed by the possibility to experience a personal encounter with the artists including the Artist in Residence.
We would like to wish you an inspiring week in Andermatt and an unforgettable festival experience.
Peter-Michael Reichel’s idea in organizing in Andermatt a festival fascinated me in the same way as former artists who visited Andermatt like Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Franz Liszt that described the region as follows: The beautifulness and the dimension of nature correspond to the beautifulness and dimension of art. I am grateful that world top artists and renowned scientists followed our invitation and are ready to let inspire themselves by this unique ambience.
President & Organiser
Already many years ago, we got the idea to organize a Classic Music Festival, it was only by our emigration to Andermatt that we found the perfect location to develop this event. Also the fortunate circumstance to allure Professor Clemens Hellsberg as Art Director, being one of the leading international experts, made it possible to develop our festival.
